Spay and Neuter your pets

No Excuses!

Millions of animals are euthanized in shelters every year.  Despite the tear jerking commercials to support humane societies, animal shelters, and adoptions; all of the rescuing and adoptions in the world will not cease the overpopulation of unwanted pets unless pet owners start practicing strict spay and neuter.

Every unneutered male dog allowed to roam at will is guaranteed to contribute to a female dog and her puppies dying in a local shelter eventually.  Go to any shelter site and you will discover numerous litters and nursing Moms facing an uncertain fate in a crowded shelter.

We hear many excuses every day from pet owners about why their animal is intact.

  • We intend to breed him/her to experience having a litter.

No, no, no.  Unless a pet owner is a responsible breeder of purebred animals, there is no excuse or reason that a cat or dog in the home should not be neutered and spayed.  If you want the experience of raising a litter, offer to foster one for a local shelter or rescue group.

  • We heard not neutering our dog will make him larger and more protective

Why would you want a dog that is more dominant?  Male dogs are calmer, less aggressive and more loving when neutered.  Female dogs have less tendency for cancer and other health issues if spayed.  Not to mention avoiding the messy business of dogs experiencing a heat cycle.  It is an empty myth that waiting to neuter a dog will somehow make the dog larger and more powerful.

  • Our dog is so pretty/handsome and we think he/she will make beautiful puppies and we can make some money.

Your dog might be beautiful; however those good looks might be also hiding genetic secrets that can be passed on to offspring.  Careful breeding of dogs should be left to the professionals and properly raising a litter (providing veterinary care and vaccinations is expensive).  Ask yourself if you are financially willing/able to support that puppy for the rest of its life.  If the answer is no, then please spay/neuter your dog.  3 out of 5 puppies born will end up in a shelter or returned to a breeder.
